One of the oldest known knotted carpets was discovered in 1949 by the team of Prof. S. J. Rudenko in a sensational archaeological site in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia. During the excavation of the grave site of a Scythian prince, they found a carpet with a quite sophisticated pattern. It had been frozen in ice and thus preserved in its original state.
