Sheep breeding in Western Anatolia

The woolen yarn in the woven and knotted saddlebags comes almost without exception from breeds of sheep that all are common in Western Anatolia. Since there are no German or English names for these breeds, the Turkish name is given.

Races Occurrence
AK KARAMAN common in Middle- and Eastanatolia, less common in West-, North- and Southanatolia. Special Identification: big fattail.
MOR KARAMAN whole Eastanatolia
KIZIL KARAMAN Elazigarea
KIVIRCIK Marmaraarea and Thrakia. Special Identification: longer and thinner, fatless tail.
DAGLIC Westanatolia. Special Identification: large, fat tail
MERINOS Common in the area around Bursa. The relatively fine wool of this breed of sheep makes it unsuitable for use in rugs and flatweaves. Marino wool has a diameter of ca. 16-22u, compared to 27-34u for other breeds of sheep
SAKIZ Westanatolia and Hatay
KAMAKUYRUK Common around Manisa and Izmir. Noted feature: a bastard of the Sakiz breed
AMASYA HEREGI Amasya and Çorum. Dagliçbastard.
KARAKAYA Whole northanatolia, especially in the regions of Trabzon , Samsun and Amasya
IVESI whole southanatolia, Hatay, Adana and Içel
HERIK Eastanatolia, Bitlis, Van, Siirt, Gümüshane
HEMSIN Artvin, Rize, Giresun.
